To what do you attribute your biggest career successes?
I attribute my career successes to a combination of tenacity, resilience, and a willingness to be a beginner. My research career has taught me the value of persistence, even when results aren’t immediate or when stepping into unfamiliar territory. I’ve been fortunate to have mentors – my family, friends, peers, bosses, coaches – who have supported and guided me in different ways. Their support has helped me build the flexibility and adaptability, and an openness to change, which has been key to my growth.
What advice do you have for future generations of women about their voice/leadership/gender equality?
While systemic and workplace changes are essential for gender equality, there are internal challenges we can work on. Many accomplished women, including myself, struggle with imposter syndrome and internalizing success, which affects confidence and leadership. Simply telling women to ‘be more confident’ isn’t enough – we need to address the deeper factors that make confidence difficult. At different stages of my life and career, mentors, peers, and therapy have helped me recognize and internalize my strengths and values. We often overlook how therapy can help us thrive professionally by overcoming limiting beliefs instilled by many external sources.
In your role, what is something you struggle with the most, and what steps have you put in place to help overcome this?
I sometimes struggle with procrastination when it comes to mundane tasks that feel less important. As a scientist, I’m used to questioning the status quo, but I’ve learned to shift my perspective. By focusing on what my employer values and how my performance will be judged, I approach these tasks with the right mindset. In the corporate world, playing within the rules is key, but as trust is built, one gains more freedom to contribute strategically. It’s about balancing compliance with the opportunity for meaningful input and change, while maintaining integrity and not tolerating disrespect or infantilization.
What healthy habits do you employ to maintain your mental health and well-being?
Creative expression is critical for well-being. I nourish that side through music, writing, spending time outdoors, and long walks for mind wandering. Meaningful relationships, especially investing in friendships with women, provide support, fulfillment and enrichment.
