What is the biggest challenge facing women leaders in our industry today and how do you overcome it?
Uncertainty. More than ever before, the current situation has turned our “normal” on its side. Working from home and navigating all the complexities of that.
Overwhelmed. From the isolation to the additional responsibilities that working from home in these times has created.
Finding balance. Managing the unending “online” meetings that have become the new norm and trying to do your job.
How do you overcome it?
Cut yourself a little slack. Show your “humanness”. As a leader, you are the example. I have witnessed women leaders running meetings with their children running in for hugs or sitting on their laps – more of this!
What is the leadership/business framework you use most often to help you lead effectively?
I know this sounds really basic and it is true – I am intentional and clear about my outcomes for every meeting, phone call or email I have – know what I want to get from it, be clear.
How do you manage your career progression?
I am an entrepreneur. Evolving and learning. Always. Have a plan for each year and work with people who challenge me to push to be better.
.What is a leader's role in creating culture?
First, I would say, work in a company whose culture feels right for you. It is difficult to create a culture for your team if you are working for an organization whose culture isn’t a fit for you.
Next, build trust with your team. Especially during times of uncertainty. For example, the term “transparency” while often used and perhaps not necessarily always displayed, can work if you are willing to communicate and be upfront with your team - letting your people know when you have information and you can share it, letting them know when you have information and you can’t share it or if you have no information – people will respect and follow a leader who creates this type of culture for their team.
The final thing that comes to mind for me is seek to be respected rather than liked. Your team will follow.
